Continuing their many projects on college campuses, the design team at RSM is creating an architectural signage and graphics package for the new conference center located on the University of California at Davis campus. Situated adjacent to the cultural complex on campus and across from the renowned Mondavi Center, this new UC Davis Marketplace will be an exciting new destination for the students, faculty, and visitors. RSM is designing the branding and graphics for such amenities as the bookstore, market, café bistro, private dining areas, and study area.

Dynamic original wall murals and integrated architectural signage are being woven into the architecture to define the different functional spaces and create a welcoming place unlike anything on campus, to linger after the theater, relax with a cup of coffee, sip a glass of wine, or browse the bookstore.

While munching on colorful macaroons, (thanks Caleb) the RSM team presented their individual research on color.

Color Theory applies to all aspects of our everyday life- from selecting a paint color for a room, the way contrast on a sign makes it legible, how you select your socks, to the exposure of a photograph. Color also appeals to the appetite. Red and orange in the McDonalds brand makes people eat faster, while the muted color palette of Starbucks invites the visitor to linger.

Color theory has been applied to personality traits, such as, red means hot and passionate and blue means cold and mellow. While there are always exceptions to every rule, color has meaning.

Different cultures around the world use color to represent important events in a variety of ways. In Ireland, orange is a religious color, and here in the US we think of Halloween and autumn.

Color applies to all cultures in multiple ways- understanding the differences is the key to color.

Below are some sites we explored during our color theory discussion:

http://www.colormunki.com

The trio are all imports from Dallas and Houston, and will be entering their senior year of high school this fall.

Here to learn the day-to-day functions of working in an environmental graphic design firm, they have so far taken part in attending business meetings, design research and the joys of computer and tech mangement.

Working in a hip design firm for the summer is not only fun and educational, but our location in San Clemente, California also has its perks. When they aren’t researching new projects and fixing servers, the three can be found hanging out at the beach, cruising on the boat, having bonfires and filling up on local Mexican food and our town’s tasty Velvet Yogurt.

RSM Design heartily welcomes our interns and hope that they have learned a lot and had some fun at the same time!

There are always new ideas, cultures, places, styles, methods and forms of inspiration to be soaked in and cultivated. So when it comes to learning, the more the better.

In order to nourish our passion for growing as designers, RSM Design has introduced a new program titled RSM University as a part of our team schedule. RSMU is designed to be a series of ‘learning lunches’ with the overall goal of Learn + Teach + Practice = Growth. We believe that the best way to learn something is to teach it yourself, with the target objective of broadening our perspectives on creativity and the arts, polishing our skill sets and refining efficiency both in imaginative output and production. If you find yourself feeling hungry for inspiration, come on by and fill up at our next meeting.
