Juxtapositions: Exhibit Design and Artifacts at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem

sandsrelics21Throughout the design process for the environmental graphics palette at the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem, RSM Design worked closely with the numerous consultants and client team, as well as the Smithsonian National Museum of Industrial History, to implement and incorporate artifacts of the steel process into the project. Historic relics original to the site, such as the ore crane,a military cannon barrel and other unique industrial artifacts are among many wonderful items to be preserved and displayed, being juxtaposed with many of the modern interventions on the site. RSM Design planned exhibits and designed numerous murals and educational plaques paying homage to this history and providing timeless and historical information about the legacy of the site.

Relics and Treasures at Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem

sandsrelics2While investigating and searching through the historic site of the Bethlehem Steel Plant, many old industrial and urban archaeological relics and artifacts were re-discovered. These one-of-a-kind artifacts provided inspiration for both the environmental graphic designs and rich palette of materials used for the Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem. RSM Design had a rare look into this world, spent numerous hours photographing and sketching the area, and would like to acknowledge the importance that these urban industrial artifacts played in our understanding of the site, its history, and the outcome of the final graphics family.

RSM Presents Philly Live!

phillylive_blog1RSM Design has been brushing up on their sports history and trivia to work on the Philly Live! project in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

This exciting entertainment and sports-themed destination lies in the center of the stadium district located in south Philadelphia, linking the stadiums and arenas for professional baseball, football, basketball and hockey. This unique project was designed to enhance the guest experience by increasing activity levels in the stadium zone not only on event days but keeping it a desired entertainment destination on non-game days as well. The project is a part of a broader movement to renew and revitalize this industrial section of the city and features a number of restaurants, sports bars and market hall as well as a hotel and retail shops.

RSM Design continues to be involved with the identity, master plan and city guidelines, and the design of the project’s graphics image from vehicular and pedestrian wayfinding to unique one-of-a-kind sports specialty graphics. The graphics palette consists of contemporary abstractions of sports themes with the overlay use of historic materials such as steel and brick that reference back to materials used in the local area. Additional specialty concepts that enhance this local aesthetic are kiosks created out of sustainable shipping containers and the integration of a local artist inspired mural system that identifies the rich history and legacy of the city, sports teams and the community.

As the project continues we look forward to adding more layers of exciting graphics to enhance the experience at Philly Live!

Urban Honolulu Street Art

honoluluproject2RSM Design has been working with an international team of developers, designers and consultants on the re-development concepts for a progressive urban mixed-use neighborhood in downtown Honolulu. It is conceived to be a community-driven urban outdoor environment that combines artists lofts, local retail and boutique shops, unique markets and other uses intertwined with urban parks, gardens and plazas.

The goal of this creative development has been to provide a destination geared for locals to grow and thrive in their education, careers and lifestyle while embracing both their cultural Hawaiian heritage and the opportunities of the future. Artist communities, active lifestyle and sustainable practices all come together to fuel local Hawaiian culture.

To kick start the process, RSM researched, created and implemented street art installations inspired by local surf spots to enhance the familiarity and inviting place-making experience. The use of stencil street art in the graphic create a textural, versatile, urban and integrated visual uniqueness to the project that celebrates the culture and creativity of the area.

Grand Opening in the Heart of the Amazon

RSM Design joined the design and development team from Portugal based Sonae Sierra at the grand opening of their latest collaboration – Manaura Shopping, located deep in the heart of the Amazon jungle. Lying on the north bank of the Rio Negro in Manaus this exciting shopping destination has become the latest tourist and locals destination for the capital of the state of Amazonas in Brazil.

RSM Design created a multi-faceted array of signage, graphics, and the logo that was inspired by the textures, colors, and patterns of the local culture, regional flora and fauna, and of course the mighty adjacent river. Local artisans were retained to create unique art installations and ensure that the graphics family felt at home within the surrounding community.  Sustainable methods and materials were used throughout in respect of this area as a popular eco-tourist destination.

Congratulations to Sonae Sierra on another extraordinary project and successful opening!

Sands “Steels” the Show!

sands3RSM Design was excited to see the completion of their designs for the identity, way finding, and specialty graphics here at this exciting new Sands Casino Resort Bethlehem in eastern Pennsylvania. What was once the vacant industrial site of the mighty Bethlehem Steel Company is now a thriving resort destination built on the foundations of this historic site. In addition to the project’s overall branding and environmental graphics program, the design team at RSM created names, brands, and identity for the casino’s restaurants, bars, and retail venues. The industrial aesthetic and historic context of this unique project were abstracted in many ways to add dynamic yet functional qualities to the graphics family.
